What's this post for?

Sombra's a hacker, a thief, and a spy: usually she's not out for blood unless she feels it's warranted, but she does keep a watchful eye out for any valuable information that passes her by. If you'd like Sombra to unearth anything specific about your character, or have any ideas about potential future interactions (including earning her ire), feel free to opt-in via the form below! Anyone that doesn't fill it out will just default to being off of Sombra's radar and not at risk for being watched, scouted, or shadowed.

And for more specific information on Sombra herself, please read her general permissions post.

❚❚❚ BASICS.

■ NAME: 'Sombra'
■ CANON: Overwatch *current day
■ AGE: 30

■ MINI-BIO: Sombra was born thirty years ago during the Omnic Crisis, when robots rose up against their human creators without warning. The threat was unparalleled, the damage widespread and it was only thanks to an elite, worldwide cadre of soldiers and specialists that machines were overthrown and the war ended. Still, for Sombra and many children like her, recovery was never so instantaneous: she was left an orphan in a city already struggling to knit its own wounds.

And hey, when you're just another hungry mouth to feed in the crowd, survival instincts are the best friend you never knew you had.

So she adapted. Learned how to press buttons to get what she wanted— and more importantly how to metaphorically do the same when it came to the people around her. What she couldn't outright hack, she cheated, she lied to, she played whatever role best suited her in the moment that made living life more than just bearable. More importantly, every piece of information— every new chunk of technology added to her repertoire only brought her closer to unraveling the mystery of just what had happened all those years ago. And who was really responsible for it.

But since these are just the cliffnotes: she's curious, cocky, selfsure to the point of arrogance whether or not she's actually got the upper hand, gr8 at hacking, considers 'friends' a stand-in word for 'resources', and never fails to do everything and anything she can to know as much as humanly possible about the world around her.

Because somewhere out there, somebody's pulling all the strings - and she's not here to play by their rules.

■ LANGUAGE: Spanish (Español Mexicano), English

■ ABILITIES:
Hacking - Using her neural interface and physical modifications, Sombra is capable of latching onto technology from a distance and either hijacking or completely shutting down its functions. Despite this, she can't go so far as to alter a device's primary function or form. Also important to note is that it takes a certain amount of mental concentration to sustain. If Sombra is wounded, or her ability to think clearly is somehow compromised, the connection will instantly break.
Translocation - Via a planted device called a 'translocator', Sombra is capable of teleporting from one location to another in an instant. That said, it's not a perpetual free ride: she can only teleport -to- wherever the translocator is currently planted. So if she threw the translocator over a wall and then teleported to it, she wouldn't then be able to just teleport right back over the wall again.
Invisibility - Digital camouflage masks Sombra from sight. This does not counter infrared or body signature vision abilities, etc.

❚❚❚ IC.
■ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: No arguments on that front, just don't expect much from Sombra in return that's either invested or sincere— she's got a thirst for the truth, and let's be real: personal everything gets in the way of that.
■ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Go for it, just give me an OOC heads up if things start to look fatal.
■ RELATIONSHIPS: She's got secrets to keep; her interest in anything emotionally compromising isn't high. That said, feel free to try - who knows, if Saturday morning cartoons are to be believed, the power of love can overcome anything. Even obnoxious hackers.

But then again, why would you even want to??

■ MEDICAL INFORMATION: She's human with a good number of cybernetic implants running along the length of her spine and skull.

Still, for Sombra and many children like her, recovery was never so instantaneous: she was left an orphan in a city already struggling to knit its own wounds.

It was also a talent set that benefited her when she chose to join the infamous Los Muertos gang at an extremely young age, a criminal band with a self-serving and simultaneously selfless cause: to save the people of Mexico from the rich corporations and politicians that were feeding on the public. In a way, that duality (as true as it is false) was likely the largest influence on Sombra's young mind. A means to write off any wrongdoing not only without guilt, but also with the added benefit of profit and satisfaction. Indulging herself by investigating literally everything within her grasp (every mystery, every locked door, every celebrity, corporation and CEO) was a byproduct of her skill, confidence and success, but when she unearthed a conspiracy at the heart of Overwatch, Sombra suddenly found herself dangerously in over her head. Unable to protect herself, she erased her existence and went into hiding for years, eventually emerging again underneath an alias and aligning herself with the terrorist organization known as Talon.

As she is now, in spite of everything, Sombra never lost her curiosity or her will to push back against conspiracy. Abhorring the idea of being manipulated, it's ironic that she survives through using those around her, often times making no attempts to mask the fact. She dabbles in blackmail, protects herself beneath the banner of a group that operates opposite to Overwatch and the threat it poses, steals technology to keep her edge and then shrugs off the consequences or accusations without skipping a beat. She's a hypocrite, but hey, it's fine if you say it to her face.

Just don't act shocked when she hacks your email accounts later on. Nothing personal.

That said, as proven by her history alone, Sombra has a habit of being overly confident without realizing it, (something other characters in game will often times comment on: ie Reaper saying 'too smart for your own good' when she's taken down in a fight) and while she's endeavored to adjust and keep herself from repeating those mistakes, there's a baseline habit there that she just can't seem to shake.

All in all, Sombra isn't a good person— she's a very bad human being by default— a byproduct of circumstance for someone who was raised in a world too openly messed up to tally, but her causes are strong. She fights to keep herself safe, valuing freedom— true control— above all else. No one will ever shape her world for her: she is intangible this time around.

Setting:

Sombra's used to adapting to the extraordinary: give her a few minutes to come to terms and she'll be fine.

Besides, exploration, discovery— it might not be the exact same thing as digital delving, but her curiosity is a suffocating addiction she'll never shake. Couple that with having a few familiar faces nearby, and Sombra will likely have as much fun digitally cataloging every scrap of information within reach (or diving through dangerous territory) as she will watching her 'old friends' with a newfound intensity.

Tl;dr, if it's new, and it's fun, she's in.

Abilities/Skills:
    Hacking
    Translocation (teleportation, in essence)
    Invisibility/stealth
    shooting like a pro, bro

hacking - Using her neural interface and physical modifications, Sombra is capable of latching onto technology from a distance and either hijacking or completely shutting down its functions. Despite this, she can't go so far as to alter a device's primary function or form: a pizza cutting robot wouldn't be able to morph into a transformer or gain any sort of power from her control, but she -could- have it turn its pizza-cutter arm towards attacking its owner or something else in its vicinity. Also important to note is that it takes a certain amount of mental concentration to sustain. If Sombra is wounded, or her ability to think clearly is somehow compromised, the connection will instantly break.

translocation - Via a planted device called a 'translocator', Sombra is capable of teleporting from one location to another in an instant. invisibility - Digital camouflage masks Sombra from sight. This does not counter infrared or body signature vision abilities, etc.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths:
▲ Tech savvy/ 1337 hacker skills, adaptive beyond her limits
▲ great at assassination, or doing pretty much anything without being seen
    ▲ liar extraordinaire
▲ has cybernetic upgrades embedded into her spine and skull
▲ has a mind capable of retaining one hell of a lot of data

Weaknesses:
▲ not particularly (physically) strong, relies more on agility, speed and leverage- not to mention ingenuity to get jobs done
▲ arrogant, occasionally blind to the obvious if she's certain she's going to win
    hates authority (unless it's hers)

Items: Translocator, overcoat, SMG gun with hexadecimal interface, undercoat, undersuit + high-collared top, encrypted earpiece.

SAMPLES
Network Sample:

[Sombra's perched a few inches away from the feed, chin tucked neatly in against her palm, glowing little claws curled where they rest against her cheek. She looks relaxed. Casual. Cloaked in the kind of expression someone uses when they're ringing up an old friend instead of sending out a wideset broadcast like a net in a storm.]

No central government, all the free space in the world— this place is paradise.

Can't believe how late I am to the party. [Mouth pulling at the corner, she reaches up to scratch at the underside of her jaw, limning it with violet light.] Almost makes me a little jealous, to be honest.

So, [Sombra starts, shifting forward by a few calculated degrees, sitting upright and dropping her hands down into her lap as a hungry little grin takes shape.] in the interest of friendship, I think we should make a trade. It's only fair, right? You've been here longer, I need somewhere to start. Information.

...And somebody to start with.

❚❚❚❚❚ CR CHART
►ACCESSING SAVED RECORDS...

❚: LEGIONNAIRES

GABRIEL REYES
AKA: REAPER
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 999/999 EXALTED
'He looks silly, standing there as the hood bunches around his mask. But he wants to know, now that he's standing here in front of her. He wants to know if she'd ever wondered why he didn't just tell her about his slowly changing state of mind and body.'

Our team leader, former soldier, resident ghost and professional vengeance-seeker; has a hip line better than mine. Doesn't ask too many questions, doesn't care what I do as long as he benefits from it. Or unless I make him think he does.

He looks out for me. I know, I know, it's all about assets. How I 'benefit the team'. But sometimes? Sometimes I think the team is all he really has anymore.

And you can't tell me that doesn't mean something.
AMÉLIE LACROIX
AKA: WIDOWMAKER
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 999/999 EXALTED
'They made a good team. They made a superb team when Sombra wasn't pursuing her own agenda and was fully supporting them - better than anything those of Overwatch could put together.'

Beautiful, deadly, intelligent— what couldn't I say about my favorite spider? You know, aside from the fact that we're both terrorists aligned with Talon and everything it stands for.

Speaking of, is lying by omission really lying? Everyone says it is, but I like to think of it as knowing when not to open your mouth about something your friend doesn't want to hear.

Ah well. I'll worry about it later.

She'll be fine.

SAMUEL ORTEZ
AKA: LOCUS
■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 849/999 REVERED
'He's kept people at a distance out of wariness and distrust, but her? Whatever side she chooses, whatever her plans may be, he is with her. Because he chooses to be'

Maybe part of it's just knowing people: how they bend, how they break— like Gabe and Amélie I see something familiar in him. Something no one else knows how to value. Society doesn't like the outcasts, the dañado.

But I do.

I like him.
TAYLOR MURRAY
AKA: AGENT YORK | LOCKSMITH
■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 835/999 REVERED
'Wasting away while scraping by until he got shot up. Not how he wants to spend his second chance at life. What he does here matters, he needs it to matter.'

It's not all that hard to figure out why we get along, Taylor and me. Doesn't hurt that he knows how to play his cards right when it comes to hacking, lying, cheating, and I like it, how relaxed he wants to be.

But I wonder if he'll still be happy once he knows the truth about me. About everything.

After all, it's easy to run out of second chances.

CORTANA
AKA: CORTANA
■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 850/999 REVERED
'If I had to be stuck with someone besides you, I could have chosen way worse. '

My hermanita, my digital twin. I've never seen a program like her, and from what I hear, I never will again. When I think about the things I'm going to miss once I leave the Legion— aside from getting literally everything for free— she's at the top of the list.
PARKER
AKA: PAYBACK
■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 810/999 REVERED
'The mission you were on sucked, I thought I should come find you and see how you were doing. And I brought you a bear, just in case.'

Observant, sharp-witted, and surprisingly efficient at all kinds of breaking the law, I can't think of a single time I didn't want Parker around—

—aside from when I have to catch up with the rest of Talon, but you know how it is when you're pretending to be one of the good guys.

CONNETICUT
AKA: MIRAGE
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 769/999 FRIENDLY
'A little celebration for surviving that hellhole. Also, a 'thank you', for having my back when I was running out of steam.'

Connie seems like the kind of person that deserves to be here with the Legion: she's smart, she cares— goes out of her way to bring everyone something if she thinks they need it. I try not to get attached, it's more hassle than it's worth in the long run. But if she outlives the Devorador de Tiempo? You wouldn't hear me complaining.
JAMISON FAWKES
AKA: JUNKRAT
■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 850/999 REVERED
'...Do I know you, mate? I can't shake the feelin' I've met ya before.'

Jamison's always been good at his job. Which is destruction. Thoughtless, hungry destruction. I liked that about working with him.

Here? It's hard to say whether he'll be able to survive without all the fireworks that kept him alive before joining the Legion. But if it doesn't, who knows, I always managed to find a use for a little chaos.

SOUTH DAKOTA
AKA: SWITCH
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 733/999 FRIENDLY
'Yeah well who's to say I'm the only brain being screwed with, -vata-?'

Fights really well. Has a temper and a little spark of crazy to her, but considering what we were fighting against at the time? Who doesn't like a little bit of crazy.

Now if she'd just stop tricking me by turning into animals...
WASHINGTON
AKA: FREELANCER
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 550/999 NEUTRAL
'What I care about is my -friends-, and what I want is a guarantee that you're not running some long game that's going to wreck us all.'

He's smart.

I'd admire it, if he wasn't a potential threat to everything I've been working for. Then again, he's right: his friends are standing close enough to me that hey could get burned. Maybe it's lucky for us both that I didn't come here for anyone but Overwatch.

And myself.

He throws some pretty good parties, though.

LENA OXTON
AKA: TRACER
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: -886/999 HOSTILE
'But just the same, Lena has always needed to be surrounded by people — to be crushed by the comfort of warm bodies, to hear the laughter of friends, and the kindred flame of family.'

Just another name on my list. Taradita.
JACK MORRISON
AKA: SOLDIER 76
■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: -475/999 HOSTILE
'For someone who doesn't let anyone touch him on a good day, much less after an incredibly traumatic spaceship adventure, he understands that she's putting some degree of trust in him. That's unexpected, and he isn't quite sure how to feel or what he should be doing. '

Qué lástima.

FELIX
AKA: BASURA
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: -999/999 HOSTILE
'Wasn't born yesterday, can't kid a kidder...the cliches go on and on. So the real question here is, how'd a fox like you end up in the henhouse?'

Not worth my time.

Or Locus'.
DISCORD
AKA: A HORSE...THING
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
STATUS: 638/999 FRIENDLY
'-They- don't put a leash on me and call it friendship, sweetheart — or even a paycheck! That's the only difference.'

Gave me a cat and then took it away from me.

Seriously.

DATAMINING FOR FUN (AND MOSTLY PROFIT)

It goes without saying that Sombra's a hacker with a penchant for sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. That said, when it comes to RP, that much obsessive curiosity can be a bit of a trial to try and play out without getting tedious or stepping on toes, which is why I've made a nifty little espionage cheatsheet/permission post here! Just fill out this form below and pop it in, and I'll either handwave what Sombra knows, entirely skip what she doesn't or use provided options as a means to get more CR.

Also since the nature of RP is ever-changing, feel free to update these lists at any time!

And thanks in advance for the help, compadres ❤❤❤

SILENT HORIZON TIMELINE

  • Cortana: waking up in a nightmare and learning about the flood isn't fun
  • Roland: wandering through memories, fighting monsters, eventually parting ways when he starts to mentally slip
  • Reaper: after teaming up briefly to gather data, Reaper deliberately leaves her behind. wtf Gabe.
  • Victor: duoing some general investigation to avoid being creeped out by a spooky ship universe
  • Locus: hacking a monster Locus, meeting Felix the Corpse, escaping alive - it's all very tiring
  • York: just a lot of misery inside implants, Delta gone cray cray, Cortana saves the day
  • Soldier 76 + Monster!Reaper: Sombra teams up with 76 to try and make up for losing Reaper and being in over her head, monster Reaper shows up, 76 loses it and gives in to bloodlust, Sombra leaves them both behind. it sucks. she isn't happy.
  • all 'monster factory' prompt threads (Gwen, South, Connie, Lena): exploring, running from monsters, trying not to fall asleep/ get lost/ get eaten or turned, varying degrees of dawning friendship, paranoia and misery - super duper unhappy and tired at this point. basically a Sim with all their meters down at 0
  • endgame fight: Lena + Monster!Soldier 76: screw it just murder the hearts, murder a lot of hearts. Lena calls 76 'Jack' during the fight, Sombra understands why 76 went hyper aggressive earlier (because he was turning into a monster, yo)
  • Soldier 76: shows up to help administer first aid to Sombra in the back of the cruiser while no one else is around, they talk, it's pretty awkward for both of those unhappy kids
  • Master Chief + Cortana: they love each other a whole lot. go home, Cortana.

Canon Powers:
    Hacking
    Translocation (teleportation, in essence)
    Invisibility/stealth
    shooting like a pro, bro

Game powers:

hacking - Using her neural interface and physical modifications, Sombra is capable of latching onto technology from a distance and either hijacking or completely shutting down its functions.

Abilities: Hand-to-hand combat training, marksmanship, con artistry.

Setting: In truth, much of Sombra's existence will probably revolve around digging into the heart of the Legion - its past, its purpose and what its existence (alongside that of its enemies) means for both herself and her world. It's not an innocuous adventure: if anything, she'll see it as a means to gain power, leverage against anyone that hunts or opposes her. But she's subtle about her motives, she's extraordinarily resourceful, and she's more than willing to play nice if that means getting exactly what she wants in time.

SAMPLES

Prose Sample: TDM thread ahoy!

Network Sample: [How much can she get away with? How much should she leave on file? (She's hacked archives, found messages like this in the past: only idiots assume their digitally stored memories are safely locked away out of reach) It's not a bad idea, recording her intentions, if only for the fact that someone else might eventually find it. Think of it as evidence regarding who she is, what motivates her.

Insurance for a rainy day.

After a moment she glances downwards at the screen, lifting a few clawed fingers to manually readjust its perspective.
]

I've always wanted to be a hero. [Bullshit maybe, but there were a few occasions when she was little where the idea sunk in. That counts, right?] Growing up in Mexico after the omnic attacks, they were everywhere. Posters, photos - you couldn't get away from the stories.

Wasn't until I got older that I realized they were only that: stories. The real world didn't work that way, and nobody was gonna swoop in and stop the políticos corruptos while there was fighting still in the streets.

[She pauses, thoughtfully setting her chin in her palm as she mulls over the rest of her unprepared monologue - like everything else, Sombra always works better when she's improvising.] Here, things are different. These people fight for what they believe in; they're not afraid of the consequences, they don't let anybody control them.

So I'm thinking of going for it. Make a leap of faith, right? [An exaggerated shrug, the slightest edge of a smile.] At least like this I'd get to do some good out there. Stick it to some bad guys for a change.

Just don't forget about home when all this is over. The world still needs Sombra looking out for it, since nobody else can be assed to.

Well— [she stops, fingers stilling against the tabletop in front of her.] Que te vaya chido.

Hacking - Using her neural interface and physical modifications, Sombra is capable of latching onto technology from a distance (20ft or less) and either hijacking or completely shutting down its functions.
For every ten minutes of full stealth, Sombra must recover with a few minutes' break.

▹NO: Major dismemberment (on the receiving end) that would permanently affect my character (ie losing a WHOLE ARM NEVER TO RETURN AGAIN). That's it. That's all there is. And even that's fine so long as it's thoroughly discussed ahead of time.
